“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” (Romans 12:2 ESV)
To conform means to comply. In the context of our focus scripture, it simply means you conduct yourself and abide by the socially acceptable standards in the world. Notice a compliance does not define who you are it simply outlines how you behave. For instance, a car can have a poor engine, but if externally it gets a fresh coat of paint, new tires, rims, etc. it is now more aesthetically compliant to what society would deem as “acceptable”. However, the “heart” of the car (the engine) is still in poor condition. This is, essentially, what we see lived out in our world every day.
In this scripture, the apostle Paul is telling us not to abide by socially acceptable standards but have a transformation (new engine) by renewing our minds. When you renew something, you make it like new. You give it new life. Paul is asking us to be transformed by giving our minds a new life through the spirit. If you renew your mind, then you will be able to successfully discern the will of God for your life.
Are you like the car that gets a new coat of paint that looks nice and shiny and new from the outside (dresses it up and takes it to church, but doesn’t experience any transformation) or are you the car that may not look like a brand new car (doesn’t have the scriptures memorized and doesn’t read the bible in a year), but has been renewed through the spirit in the mind (received a new engine). Allow the Spirit to renew your mind that you may experience the transformation that can only come from God.
“For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace” (Rom. 8:6).
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, keep me from conforming to the ways of the world. I choose life in you. I choose to be transformed and renewed by the spirit. Make me who you want me to be. Teach me to be spiritually minded and not carnally driven. In Jesus’s name I pray. Amen!
