In his grace, God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well. So, if God has given you the ability to prophesy, speak out with as much faith as God has given you. If your gift is serving others, serve them well. If you are a teacher, teach well. If your gift is to encourage others, be encouraging. If it is giving, give generously. If God has given you leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously. And if you have a gift for showing kindness to others, do it gladly. (Romans 12:6-8 NLT)
A gift is something we receive freely through no effort of our own. It is simply given to us. Have you ever met someone who is naturally gifted in an area? A talent they make no effort in, they simply flourish. That’s the hand of God’s grace. What an amazing testimony of His intricate work in our lives.
This scripture gives us different examples of giftings. Although all the gifts are very unique from one another, they all underscore one common theme…excellence. This scripture is calling on our natural abilities to be on display and in service with a spirit of excellence. We are being called to come up higher. How exactly can we come up higher or do things with a spirit of excellence? Practice!
Although a gift is a natural ability, we can strengthen our talent through practice. Practice is not solely tuning your instrument and playing it continuously to get better or attending all choir practices to ensure you are at your best. We can practice serving others through our kindness. We can serve others through our patience while teaching. We can practice giving to those in need. This isn’t solely monetary. It can be giving of our time, prayers, attention, etc. What better way to use our grace-given talents then to glorify the one whom bestowed them upon us by freely exercising them in our day-to-day through blessing those around us.
Do you have natural talents and abilities that are going unused or unnoticed? God is calling you to serve well with the grace he’s given you. Go the extra mile, be on time, do all things with integrity. Share your gifts and talents with others. Practice sharing them. They were never meant to be kept hidden.
“God works in different ways, but it is the same god who does the work in all of us (1 Cor.12:6).”
